On the Day of Your Procedure:
Your visit with Edgewood Surgical Hospital begins with check in at Registration by our friendly staff. Once registration is complete, the pre-op nurse will walk you back to the Pre-Op Area, where we’ll take your vital signs, administer any preoperative medications and start an IV while the nurse asks questions regarding your health history. You will also meet at least one of our anesthesia providers as well as the nurses who will be taking care of you while you are in the operating room.
Your procedure will be reviewed with you by both the pre-op nurse and the anesthesia provider. Once your procedure is complete, the Post-Op Recovery Team will be with you until discharge.
During the recovery period, we’ll monitor your vital signs, offer you beverages and review the discharge instructions with you and your family (or whoever has accompanied you to the hospital).
Finally, after you meet the discharge criteria you will be escorted to your vehicle or one of our spacious inpatient stay rooms by a member of our staff.

Are patient stays limited at Edgewood Surgical Hospital vs. a traditional hospital?
No. A surgical hospital, like Edgewood, is a Medicare approved, fully licensed hospital in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania just like every hospital in Pennsylvania. As a result, the criteria used to determine a patient’s length of stay would be consistent with that used in all Pennsylvania hospitals.
How do the costs of surgical hospitals compare to traditional hospitals?
Because the service to patients and surgeons at surgical hospitals focuses solely on surgery, they are able to provide superior services at costs to the patient or insurance company that are typically less than a traditional hospital.
How do infection rates in surgical hospitals compare to traditional hospitals?
A recent analysis of specialty hospitals by HECG reported that “specialty hospitals have a significantly lower rate of infection than traditional hospitals.”
This is an important distinction because according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, hospital infections are the fourth (4th) leading cause of mortality in the U.S. Edgewood Surgical Hospital has historically had an infection rate 160 TIMES LESS than the average of all hospitals in Pennsylvania.
Do surgical hospitals provide charity care to the community?
Yes. As a matter of fact, a national study by the American Hospital Association concluded that when the financial impact of taxes paid by surgical hospitals are included with the amount of charity care provided, that the total proportion of net revenues that surgical hospitals provide to the overall financial benefit of the community actually exceeds that provided by traditional hospitals (which do not give back to the community through taxes).
What are the benefits of a physician-managed surgical hospital?
Surgical hospitals have developed as a result of the motivation of physicians to (1) directly control the quality of care given to their patients, (2) have access to more staff assistance, (3) maintain greater decision-making authority over the selection of the latest equipment and supplies and (4) allow more timely scheduling and treatment of patients.
What factors have driven the recent development of surgical hospitals in the U.S.?
Patient preferences for specialized out-patient and in-patient facilities have been growing rapidly in the past decade in the U.S. Patients desire access to the latest treatment processes and technologies now offered in state-of-the-art surgical hospitals.
Surgical hospitals have redesigned the care delivery process with a focus on enhancing the care that the patient receives.
How do surgical hospitals excel in placing greater emphasis on the needs of individual patients?
Specialty surgical hospitals place a greater emphasis on the services identified by patients as important, such as comfortable/private waiting areas, increased attention from clinical staff and administration, the elimination of many common inconveniences, availability of catered meals and snacks, etc.
Meeting patient expectations is at the core of the mission of surgical hospitals like Edgewood.
